CONTRAIL VACFORM STAAKEN R.VI

THIS venerable vacform was a bold move when released in the early 1980′s. Mine was heavily modded with full interior, and lots of internal wood and wire stiffening and plastic sheet. It was covered in tissue that had the polygon pattern in pencil before all the six colours were handpainted individually…The model has featured in both Scale Models and Windsock. It was inspired by George Haddow’s scratchbuilt shown here below, and  in aSTAAKEN 5STAKKEN. 6RPLANE 1STAAKEN.8.nother page on this blog.

PARASAUROLOPHUS, 1:20 SCALE, 1995.

This is a soft vinyl kit from the wizards at Japan’s Kaiyodo factory and one of my favourite dinosaur models. The three juveniles are modified from Tamiya plastic kits and the flora is real, pulled from the dry soil of Tenerife. To improve the look of the mother Para’ I added glass bead eyes and painted latex rubber for the crest’s membrane.

CERATOSAURUS, 1:12 SCALE, 1996.

Much the same story, albeit this resin Jurassic theropod  carnivore has been slightly modified. I altered the legs and feet to improve the animation and extended the tongue with Milliput. Original master model was sculpted by Tom Dickens.

BARYONYX WALKERI, 1:12 SCALE, 1996.

This large Saurian Studios resin kit from an original master sculpted by Tom Dickens, was built completely stock aside from glass eyes and mounting it to a sturdy dioramic base with attendant foliage. The colours are purely imaginary – one of the true joys of dino-modelling!

DINORAMAS

Another short-lived venture, DINORAMAS was my 1990′s personal modelling service/photo library  which never got off the ground due to myriad copyright issues. Nevertheless,  all the effort was eventually rewarded by publication of my Kalmbach book, Building and Painting Model Dinosaurs (1998). This featured most of the 60 plus Dinosaur dioramas I still have and will be offering for sale on this site in the near future…

IMPERIAL SPEEDER BIKE, 1:12 SCALE, 1984.

One of my SF faves – and the most memorable things about Return of the Jedi; unless you count Princess Leia’s costume… I shot this MPC model not on Endor’s  forest moon but in Ashridge estate just down the road. (Featured in March/April 1984 Airfix Magazine.)

AT-AT, 1:75 SCALE, 1982.

This is one of many Star Wars-related kits Airfix/MPC pushed out in the 1980s; and one of their best. Not obvious here, but I added lights and fibre-optics to the command centre. (Featured in Autumn 1982 New Voyager .)

ALIEN 3, 1:9 SCALE, 1992.

This was one of a series of Alien kits produced by Halcyon; some plastic, others in resin. I had intended to write a book on modelling the Aliens creatures and vehicles but Fox copyright/licence fees proved prohibitive.

ALIEN, 1:12 SCALE, 1982.

The original Giger-designed Alien for the first movie. This was a modified MPC kit, with fish bones/fin spines replacing moulded claws and teeth. The Nostromo display corridor was completely scratchbuilt to house it. (Featured in Space Voyager, 1982.)

A7V, 1:35 SCALE, circa 1977.

I built this Tauro kit for Military Modelling – I forget the actual issue – and posed it on pseudo-Western Front groundworks. The figure came with the kit. An intriguing model; unique at the time but no longer…
